Bag Filters, Cartridge Filters and Disc Filters: Which One Do You Need?

- Cartridge: fine filtration, small to medium flow
- Bag: high flow, heavy dirt, cheap replacement bags
- Disc: washable, common in irrigation
- Size by flow rate (m³/h or TPH) and the particle size to remove

Difference Between Bag Filter and Cartridge Filter
| Bag filter | Cartridge filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Flow | High: plants, borehole lines, industry | Small to medium: homes, RO pre-filtration |
| Dirt holding | Large: good for dirty water | Smaller: clogs faster on dirty water |
| Replacement | Bag only, low cost | Whole cartridge |
How Does a Bag Filter Work?
Water enters the housing and flows through a filter bag held in a basket. Particles stay inside the bag; clean water leaves through the outlet. When the pressure difference between inlet and outlet rises, the bag is full: open the housing, swap the bag and close it.

How to Size a Bag Filter
- Find your flow rate in m³/h (TPH) and choose a housing rated for it.
- Choose the micron rating of the bag for the particles you need to remove.
- For very dirty water, use two stages (coarse then fine) so the fine bag lasts longer.
How Does a Disc Filter Work?
A stack of thin plastic discs with grooves is pressed together. Water passes through the grooves, which trap particles. To clean it, open the filter, loosen the stack and rinse the discs with water.
Disc Filter vs Screen Filter
A screen filter uses a single mesh; a disc filter traps dirt through the depth of the grooves, so it holds more dirt before cleaning and copes better with organic matter. Both are common in drip irrigation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bag filter and a cartridge filter?
Bag filters handle higher flows and more dirt with cheap replacement bags; cartridge filters suit smaller flows and fine filtration.
How does a bag filter work?
Water flows through a filter bag in a basket; particles stay in the bag, and the bag is replaced when the pressure difference rises.
How does a disc filter work?
Grooved discs stacked together trap particles as water passes through the grooves; the discs are rinsed to clean them.
How do I clean a disc filter?
Open the housing, loosen the disc stack and rinse the discs with water, then reassemble.
How much is a bag filter housing?
Our stainless bag filter housings start from KSh 60,000; replacement bags are KSh 1,600.
