How to size a UV sterilizer
- Find your highest flow in litres per minute (open all the taps the UV will serve).
- Divide by 3.8 to get GPM.
- Choose a unit rated at or above that GPM.
For example, a water refilling station filling at 20 litres per minute needs about 5.3 GPM, so a 6 GPM unit fits.
Where UV fits in a treatment system
Sediment filter → carbon filter → (RO or UF) → UV → storage or tap. UV is the final disinfection step; it does not replace RO for salty or fluoride water. See RO vs UF and borehole water treatment.
Maintenance
- Replace the lamp about every 12 months, even if it still glows: its UV output drops.
- Clean the quartz sleeve when you change filters.
- Keep the unit powered all the time.
