Do I Need a Water Softener? Signs of Hard Water, Sizing and Prices in Kenya

Signs you have hard water
- White crust on kettles, taps, showerheads and tiles.
- Soap and detergent do not lather well.
- Geysers and boilers lose efficiency and elements burn out.
- RO membranes scale and output drops.
How a softener works
Water passes through resin beads that capture calcium and magnesium and release sodium. When the resin is full, the control valve runs a regeneration: it rinses the resin with brine from the salt tank, then returns to service.

How to size a softener
- Test the hardness of your water.
- Find your peak flow in tonnes (m³) per hour: 1 T/H = 1,000 litres per hour.
- Choose a unit rated for your peak flow; higher hardness needs more resin or more frequent regeneration.
Softener or RO?
A softener removes hardness but not salt or fluoride. If your water is salty or high in fluoride, you need RO, often with a softener before it. See borehole water treatment.
