Cleaning and Sanitising 20-Litre Bottles in a Water Refill Shop

Quick answer: Every bottle brought for refilling should be inspected, washed, sanitised and rinsed with treated water before it is filled and capped. Reject bottles that are cracked, smell or have stains that will not come off. A high-pressure bottle rinser makes the rinse fast and consistent.
Key facts
  • Inspect: reject cracked, smelly or stained bottles
  • Wash, sanitise, rinse with treated water

Step by Step

  1. Inspect: look for cracks, smells, algae or stains. Reject bad bottles and offer a new one.
  2. Wash: clean the inside with a bottle brush and a food-safe detergent; clean the outside and neck.
  3. Sanitise: use a food-safe sanitiser at the strength on its label, for the contact time stated.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with treated water (a high-pressure rinser does this well).
  5. Fill and cap straight away with a clean, new cap or seal.

Hygiene Rules for the Shop

Why It Matters

A clean machine cannot fix a dirty bottle. Customers judge a refill shop by how clean it looks, and county health officers inspect premises. Packaged water sold in shops also needs KEBS certification.
