Quick answer: RO plant size (litres per hour) = daily purified water needed ÷ hours the plant runs per day. Feed water = daily need ÷ recovery (for example 50%), and the rest leaves as reject. So 5,000 litres a day over 10 hours needs about a 500 LPH plant, and at 50% recovery it uses 10,000 litres of feed water. Recovery depends on your water test, so use the figure your designer gives.
Key facts
  • LPH = daily need ÷ running hours
  • Feed water = daily need ÷ recovery
  • Reject = feed − product
  • Recovery depends on the water test

Why Recovery Matters

Salty or hard water forces lower recovery to avoid scaling the membranes, which means more feed water and more reject. Your borehole must supply the feed volume, and the reject needs a safe outlet. See why RO plants need antiscalant.

Add a Margin

Choose the next plant size up, so the plant does not run flat out all day and has room for growth. A storage tank for purified water covers busy hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate RO plant capacity?

Divide the purified water needed per day by the hours the plant can run per day.

How much reject water does an RO plant produce?

Feed water minus product; at 50% recovery, one litre of reject for every litre of product.

What size RO plant do I need for 10,000 litres per day?

Running 10 hours a day, about 1,000 LPH; choose the next size up for margin.

How much does an RO plant cost in Kenya?

It depends on capacity: see the price table above, from small 250 LPH plants to industrial systems.

What is RO recovery?

The percentage of feed water that becomes purified water.
