Shower Booster Pumps: Fixing Weak Showers
Pictured: Grundfos twin-port shower pump.
Quick answer: Showers are often weak when the water tank is on the roof just above the bathroom, so gravity gives little pressure. A shower booster pump switches on automatically when the shower opens and raises the pressure; models are rated by the pressure boost they add, for example 1.5 or 2.0 bar. Check the tank feed, pipe size and power point before buying.
Key facts
  • Low tank height = weak gravity pressure
  • Booster starts automatically with flow
  • Listed models add 1.5 or 2.0 bar
  • A hot-water circulator is a different pump

Why Is My Shower Weak?

Clean the shower head and check valves first; if the pressure is still low, a booster is the fix.

How a Shower Booster Works

The pump sits in the line to the shower. When you open the tap, it senses the flow and starts; when you close it, it stops. Pumps are rated by the extra pressure they add.

Installation Tips

Hot-Water Circulators

A circulator pump is different: it keeps hot water moving in a loop so it arrives at the tap quickly, saving the water wasted while waiting for it to warm up.

Whole-house pressure: booster pumps and pressure tanks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I increase shower pressure?

Clean the shower head and check valves; if the tank is too low, fit a shower booster pump.

How much is a shower booster pump in Kenya?

Our Grundfos shower boosters start from KSh 76,000.

What is the difference between 1.5 and 2.0 bar boosters?

The 2.0 bar model adds more pressure for higher or longer pipe runs.

Is a circulator pump the same as a booster?

No, a circulator moves hot water in a loop so it arrives quickly; a booster raises pressure.
