Display Fridge Electricity Use and How to Cut the Bill

Quick answer: Electricity use = power (watts) × hours the compressor actually runs. A display fridge is switched on all day, but the compressor cycles on and off, so the real use depends on size, room heat, how full it is and how often the door opens. Read the watts or kWh/day on the rating plate, multiply by your tariff, and keep it away from heat to cut the bill.
Key facts
- kWh = watts × running hours ÷ 1,000
- The compressor cycles; it does not run non-stop
- Heat, open doors and poor seals raise the bill
- Check the rating plate for real figures

How to Work Out the Running Cost
- Find the power (watts) or energy (kWh per day) on the rating plate inside the fridge.
- If you only have watts, estimate the hours the compressor runs per day (it cycles on and off).
- kWh per day = watts × running hours ÷ 1,000.
- Monthly cost = kWh per day × 30 × your tariff per kWh (see your electricity bill).
| Example (illustration only) | Value |
|---|---|
| Compressor power | 300 W |
| Running hours per day | 12 |
| Energy | 300 × 12 ÷ 1,000 = 3.6 kWh/day |
| Monthly | 3.6 × 30 = 108 kWh × your tariff |
What Raises the Bill
- Direct sun, ovens or a hot, closed room around the fridge.
- Blocked vents at the back or bottom (it needs airflow).
- Worn door seals and doors left open.
- Ice build-up on the evaporator; dirty condenser coils.
- Loading warm drinks in large quantities at once.
How to Cut Power Use
- Leave space around it for air and clean the condenser coils regularly.
- Replace torn door gaskets.
- Set the thermostat only as cold as the product needs.
- Choose the right size: a half-empty large fridge wastes power.

Frequently asked questions
How much electricity does a display fridge use?
Watts × hours the compressor runs ÷ 1,000 gives kWh per day; check the rating plate and your tariff.
Does a display fridge run all day?
It is on all day, but the compressor cycles on and off as needed.
How can I reduce my fridge electricity bill?
Keep it out of the sun with space for air, clean the coils, fix door seals and do not overcool.
Do bigger fridges use more power?
Generally yes, so choose a size you will keep reasonably full.
