Choosing a Backup Generator for a Water Refill, Milk ATM or Dairy Business
Pictured: 2.8 kVA petrol generator (left) and 4.5 kVA diesel generator with automatic transfer switch (right).
Quick answer: Power cuts spoil milk and stop water sales. A backup generator keeps the business running. Size it from the total running power of what must stay on, plus extra for motor starting (pumps and compressors). Our generators cost KSh 26,100 (1 kVA petrol) to KSh 247,950 (4.5 kVA diesel with an automatic transfer switch).
Key facts
  • Add up the running power of everything that must stay on
  • Allow extra for motors starting (pumps, chillers, compressors)
  • Diesel suits long running hours; petrol suits short backup
  • Automatic transfer switch = switches over by itself

Automatic Transfer Switch and Power Accessories

Current listed prices incl. VAT (updated 1 October 2026).

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) starts using the generator when mains power fails and switches back when it returns, so a milk chiller or refill station keeps running without anyone present (with a generator that supports auto-start).

How to Size a Generator

  1. List what must keep working: chiller, milk ATM, RO plant, pumps, lights, payment system.
  2. Add up their running power (on each nameplate, in watts or kW).
  3. Add extra for motor starting: pumps and compressors draw several times their running power for a moment.
  4. Choose a generator above that total, and do not run it at full load for long periods.

Can You Run a Generator Overnight or Every Day?

Generators can run for long periods if they are sized correctly, kept serviced (oil, filters) and have enough fuel and ventilation. Follow the service schedule in the manual.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a generator in Kenya?

Our generators cost KSh 26,100 (1 kVA petrol) to KSh 247,950 (4.5 kVA diesel with ATS).

What size generator do I need for a milk chiller or water refill station?

Add up the running power of the equipment, allow extra for motor starting, and choose a generator above that total. Send us the list for a recommendation.

What is an automatic transfer switch?

It switches the supply to the generator when mains power fails and back when it returns.

Is it safe to run a generator indoors?

No. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide; run generators outdoors with good ventilation.

Petrol or diesel generator?

Petrol for short outages and small loads; diesel for long running hours and bigger loads.
