Should You Rewind or Replace a Burnt Electric Motor?
Pictured: Power-UK 2 HP electric motor.
Quick answer: Rewinding replaces the burnt copper windings and is often worthwhile for larger motors with a sound frame, core and shaft. For small motors, a new one can cost little more and comes with a warranty, so replacement is often better. Either way, find out why it burned, or the new winding will fail too.
Key facts
  • Rewind larger motors with a sound core and shaft
  • Small motors: replacement is often better value
  • Find the cause: overload, single phasing, low voltage, water
  • Protect with overload and phase-failure relays

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to rewind or replace a motor?

Rewinding is often cheaper for large motors; for small motors a new one is often better value.

Why do electric motors burn out?

Overload, single phasing, low voltage, undersized cable, water or dust, and worn bearings.

Does rewinding reduce motor efficiency?

A poor rewind can; use a trusted workshop that rewinds to the original specification.

How do I protect a motor from burning?

Use a correctly set overload relay, phase-failure protection, the right cable size, and keep it dry.
