Quick answer: Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most reliable way to remove fluoride at home or in a business. Boiling does not remove fluoride: it concentrates it as water evaporates. Ordinary sediment and carbon filters do not remove it either. Test your water first; our home RO purifiers cost KSh 30,000 to KSh 100,000, and commercial RO plants are available for schools, institutions and refill stations.
Key facts
  • RO removes fluoride; boiling concentrates it
  • Sediment and carbon filters alone do not remove fluoride
  • WHO guideline value: 1.5 mg/L
  • Test the water before choosing treatment

Is There Fluoride in Water in Kenya?

Many boreholes and springs in parts of Kenya, especially in Rift Valley areas, have naturally high fluoride. You cannot see, smell or taste it, so only a laboratory test tells you the level.

Why High Fluoride Is a Problem

Long-term drinking of water with high fluoride causes dental fluorosis (brown, mottled teeth), especially in children, and at higher levels skeletal fluorosis (stiff, painful joints and bones). The World Health Organization guideline value for fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/L; check the Kenyan standard with KEBS.

Can You Remove Fluoride From Water by Boiling It?

No. Boiling kills germs but does not remove fluoride. As water boils off, the fluoride left behind becomes more concentrated.

Which Filters Remove Fluoride?

MethodRemoves fluoride?
BoilingNo (concentrates it)
Sediment / carbon filtersNo, not reliably
UF (ultrafiltration)No: UF removes particles and bacteria, not dissolved fluoride
Reverse osmosis (RO)Yes: removes most fluoride and other dissolved salts

How to Test Water for Fluoride

Take a sample to an accredited laboratory and ask for fluoride, TDS and the other drinking-water parameters. See how to read a water test report. After installing RO, test the treated water to confirm it is below the limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can RO remove fluoride from water?

Yes. Reverse osmosis removes most fluoride along with other dissolved salts.

Can you remove fluoride from water by boiling it?

No. Boiling concentrates fluoride because water evaporates and the fluoride stays.

Do ordinary water filters remove fluoride?

Sediment, carbon and UF filters do not reliably remove fluoride; use RO.

What is the safe level of fluoride in drinking water?

The WHO guideline value is 1.5 mg/L; check the Kenyan standard with KEBS.

How much is a fluoride water purifier in Kenya?

Our home RO purifiers cost KSh 30,000 to KSh 100,000.
