Bag Sealing Machines: Choosing a Hand, Foot or Continuous Band Sealer
Pictured: manual plastic and mylar bag heat sealer.
Quick answer: Bag sealers melt the two layers of the bag together with heat and pressure. A hand impulse sealer suits small volumes, a foot-operated sealer frees both hands for faster work, and a continuous band sealer feeds bags through on a conveyor for production lines, often printing a batch code at the same time.
Key facts
  • Heat + pressure fuse the bag layers
  • Hand: small volumes; foot: faster; band: production
  • Set heat time for the bag thickness
  • Band sealers can print batch codes

Getting a Good Seal

Which Bags Can Be Sealed?

Most polythene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) bags and many laminated or foil (mylar) pouches can be heat-sealed; check that the bag's inside layer is heat-sealable.

Cups, Bottles and Codes

For cups use a cup sealer (cup sealing); for bottle caps, induction sealing (induction vs heat sealing). Dates and batch numbers: batch coding.

Frequently asked questions

Which sealing machine is best for small businesses?

A hand impulse sealer for small volumes; a foot sealer when you pack many bags a day.

What is a continuous band sealer?

A machine that seals bags as they travel through heated bands on a conveyor, often printing a code too.

Why are my bag seals weak?

Heat time too short, dirty sealing area, worn Teflon tape, or releasing before the seal cools.

Can foil bags be heat sealed?

Many laminated foil (mylar) pouches can, if the inner layer is heat-sealable.
