How to Read Stainless Tube Sizes
"38 dia × 1.2 mm g304" means a round tube 38 mm across the outside, with a 1.2 mm wall, in grade 304. "40×40×1.2 mm" is a square tube 40 mm by 40 mm with a 1.2 mm wall.
Is Stainless Steel Pipe Safe for Drinking Water?
Food-grade stainless (304 or 316) is widely used for drinking water and food lines. Decorative tube (often 201) is meant for railings and furniture, not pressure water lines; use proper pressure-rated pipe and fittings for plumbing.
How to Cut, Bend and Weld Stainless Tube
- Cut with a stainless cutting disc or a pipe cutter; deburr the ends.
- Bend with a tube bender of the right size to avoid kinking; thin-wall tube kinks easily.
- Weld with TIG (or stainless rods), then clean and passivate the weld to restore corrosion resistance.
