How Thick Is a Stainless Steel Sheet?
- 0.5–0.8 mm: wall cladding, splash backs, light covers.
- 1–1.2 mm: work tops, cabinets, machine panels.
- 1.5–2 mm: tanks, heavy-duty tables, brackets.
- 2.5–3 mm: structural parts and heavy fabrication.
Is Stainless Steel Sheet Magnetic?
Grade 304 is usually non-magnetic or only slightly magnetic (cold working can make it slightly magnetic). Grade 201 can be more magnetic. A magnet test alone is not a reliable way to identify the grade: ask for it on the invoice.
How to Cut and Bend Stainless Steel Sheet
- Cut thin sheet with an angle grinder and a thin stainless cutting disc, or with shears; thick sheet needs plasma or laser cutting.
- Bend on a sheet-metal brake; stainless springs back more than mild steel.
- Use stainless-only discs and brushes to avoid rust spots from carbon steel.
