How Does Asset Finance Work?
The lender pays the supplier for the machine. You pay a deposit, then fixed monthly instalments that include interest. Until you finish paying, the lender holds the machine as security (usually through a chattels or logbook-type agreement). When the loan is cleared, the machine is fully yours.
Who Offers Asset Finance in Kenya?
- Commercial banks: larger amounts, need business records and often bank statements for 6–12 months.
- SACCOs: loans based on your savings and guarantors; often easier for members with a savings history.
- Microfinance banks and institutions: smaller machines and newer businesses.
- Government funds such as the Youth Enterprise Development Fund and Women Enterprise Fund have group and individual loan products; check their current terms.
What Lenders Usually Ask For
- ID, KRA PIN and business registration or permit.
- Bank or M-Pesa statements (often 6–12 months).
- A proforma invoice from the supplier with the exact model and price.
- A simple cash-flow showing how the machine earns its instalment.
- Deposit, insurance on the machine and, for some lenders, guarantors.
Worked Example: Monthly Instalment
Example only (rates vary by lender): a machine costing KSh 300,000 with a 20% deposit (KSh 60,000) leaves KSh 240,000 financed. At 18% a year on a reducing balance over 24 months, the instalment is about KSh 12,000 a month. You repay about KSh 287,600 in total, so the interest is about KSh 47,600, before any fees and insurance.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Machine price | KSh 300,000 |
| Deposit (20%) | KSh 60,000 |
| Financed | KSh 240,000 |
| Rate / term | 18% a year, 24 months |
| Monthly instalment | about KSh 12,000 |
Will the Machine Pay Its Own Instalment?
Divide the instalment by 30 to get the daily amount the machine must earn after stock and running costs: KSh 12,000 ÷ 30 = KSh 400 a day. A milk ATM earning KSh 15 margin per litre must sell about 27 litres a day just to cover it. Check this with the milk ATM profit calculator or the water business profit guide before you sign.

Tips to Get Approved
- Run your business money through one account or till for at least six months.
- Start with a smaller machine and grow; a clean repayment record makes the next loan easier.
- Ask about early repayment: some lenders charge a fee, others reduce interest.
- Insure the machine; most lenders require it.
