Boiler Feed Water Treatment for Factories, Hotels and Dairies
Pictured: H-TECH automatic water softener (left) and 1000 LPH industrial RO (right).
Quick answer: Untreated water leaves scale (hardness) inside a boiler that wastes fuel and overheats tubes, and dissolved oxygen causes corrosion. The standard treatment is a water softener to remove hardness, often RO to cut dissolved solids, plus chemical dosing and regular blowdown as the boiler maker specifies. Our softeners start at KSh 60,400.
Key facts
  • Scale wastes fuel and overheats tubes
  • Softener removes hardness; RO lowers TDS
  • Chemical dosing and blowdown per the boiler maker
  • Monitor hardness, TDS/conductivity daily

Why Boilers Need Treated Water

ProblemCauseEffect
ScaleCalcium and magnesium (hardness)Insulates tubes, wastes fuel, causes overheating and failures
CorrosionDissolved oxygen and low pHPitting and leaks in tubes and pipes
Carry-over and foamingHigh dissolved solidsWet, dirty steam and damaged equipment

The Treatment Line

  1. Pre-filtration to remove sediment (and iron, if present).
  2. Water softener to remove hardness.
  3. RO where the boiler needs low dissolved solids.
  4. Chemical dosing (oxygen scavengers, pH and scale control) as the boiler maker or water treatment chemist specifies.
  5. Blowdown to remove concentrated water from the boiler on schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why do boilers need soft water?

Hardness forms scale inside the boiler, which wastes fuel and overheats tubes.

Is a softener enough for boiler feed water?

For many low-pressure boilers a softener plus dosing is enough; others also need RO. Follow the boiler maker's water specification.

What causes boiler corrosion?

Mainly dissolved oxygen and low pH; chemical dosing and deaeration control it.

What is boiler blowdown?

Draining some concentrated water from the boiler to keep dissolved solids within limits.

How much is a water softener for a boiler in Kenya?

Our softeners start at KSh 60,400; size depends on flow and hardness.
