Do You Need a Cold Room? Cold Room vs Milk Chiller vs Display Fridge
Pictured: H-TECH milk cooling tank (left) and a double-door display fridge (right).
Quick answer: A cold room is an insulated walk-in room cooled by a refrigeration unit. It suits businesses storing large volumes of packed goods (crates, cartons, produce). For liquid milk, a stainless milk chiller cools faster and is easier to clean. For drinks, yoghurt and packed food in a shop, display fridges cost much less. Choose by what you store, how much, and how fast it must cool.
Key facts
  • Cold room = insulated room + refrigeration unit
  • Milk: a chiller cools bulk milk faster
  • Shops: display fridges cost far less
  • Size by daily volume and target temperature

How Does a Cold Room Work?

A cold room has insulated panels (walls, roof and floor), an insulated door, and a refrigeration system: a compressor and condenser outside, an evaporator (cooling fan unit) inside, and a thermostat/control panel that holds the set temperature. The refrigerant carries heat from inside to outside.

What Determines Cold Room Price in Kenya?

Cost driverWhy it matters
Size (length × width × height)More panels and a bigger refrigeration unit
TemperatureChiller rooms (above 0 °C) cost less than freezer rooms (below 0 °C)
Panel thicknessThicker panels for freezing; saves power
Daily load and pull-down timeWarm produce loaded daily needs more cooling capacity
Door, curtains, shelvingExtras add cost but cut losses
Power supplyThree-phase units, stabiliser, backup power

Ask any quote to list panel thickness, compressor capacity, the temperature it is designed for and the daily load it can cool.

Cold Room vs Milk Chiller for Milk

Milk must be cooled quickly to about 4 °C to stop bacteria. A milk chiller (cooling tank) has the refrigerant in contact with the stainless tank and an agitator, so warm milk cools fast and evenly. A cold room cools air, which cools milk in cans slowly. For collection centres, co-operatives and milk bars, a chiller is the right tool.

Cold Room vs Display Fridge for Shops

Minimarts, milk bars, butcheries and drinks shops mostly need to show and sell cold goods. Display fridges do that at a fraction of a cold room's cost, use a normal socket, and can be added one at a time as sales grow.

Does a Cold Room Need Ventilation?

The room itself is sealed, but the outdoor condenser needs free airflow and shade to reject heat. A condenser in a hot, closed space works harder and uses more power. The same applies to chillers and fridges: leave space around them.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a cold room in Kenya?

It depends on size, temperature (chiller or freezer), panel thickness and cooling load; get a quote listing these.

How does a cold room work?

Insulated panels keep heat out while a compressor, condenser and evaporator move heat from inside to outside under thermostat control.

Is a cold room good for storing milk?

For bulk raw milk, a milk chiller is better because it cools milk faster and more evenly.

What is cheaper than a cold room for a shop?

Display fridges: lower cost, normal power socket, and you can add more as sales grow.

Does a cold room need ventilation?

The room is sealed, but the outdoor condenser needs good airflow and shade.

What temperature should a cold room be?

It depends on the product: chiller rooms run above 0 °C, freezer rooms below. Follow the product requirements.
