Why a Glowing Lamp May Not Be Working
UV sterilizers kill bacteria and viruses with invisible UV-C light. The lamp also gives off some visible blue light, which keeps shining long after the UV-C output has dropped too low to disinfect. That is why replacement is done by time, not by whether the lamp is on.
Replacement Schedule
| Part | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| UV lamp | About every 12 months / ~9,000 hours (follow the maker) |
| Quartz sleeve cleaning | Every 3–6 months, more often with hard or iron-rich water |
| Quartz sleeve | When scratched, cracked or permanently cloudy |
| O-rings | When the sleeve is changed or if leaking |
| Pre-filters (sediment, carbon) | As scheduled; dirty water shields germs from UV |
Signs the Lamp or Sleeve Needs Attention
- The lamp is about a year old.
- The lamp-out alarm or indicator shows a fault.
- A lab test finds bacteria after the UV.
- The quartz sleeve looks cloudy, brown or scaled.
How to Replace a UV Lamp Safely
- Switch off and unplug the ballast; never look at a lit UV lamp.
- Let the lamp cool for a few minutes.
- Remove the lamp connector and pull the lamp straight out of the sleeve, holding it by the ends.
- Fit the new lamp without touching the glass with bare fingers (use gloves or a clean cloth).
- Reconnect, power on and check the indicator.
- Every few months: close the water, release pressure, remove and clean the quartz sleeve with a mild descaler, rinse and refit with good O-rings.

UV Works Best on Clean Water
Sediment and colour cast shadows that protect germs. Fit UV after sediment and carbon filters (and after RO in a vending plant). Hard water scales the sleeve, so a softener helps. See UV vs ozone.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I replace my UV water sterilizer lamp?
About every 12 months of continuous use, or as the manufacturer states.
Does a UV lamp still work if it is glowing?
Not necessarily; UV-C output fades while visible light continues.
How often should I clean the quartz sleeve?
Every 3–6 months, more often with hard or iron-rich water.
Can I touch a UV lamp?
Avoid touching the glass with bare hands; skin oils create hot spots. Never look at a lit lamp.
Should UV come before or after filters?
After sediment and carbon filtration (and after RO), on clear water.
