Filtering Water for Drip Irrigation and Greenhouses in Kenya
Pictured: Frp filter tank and Stainless Steel Bag Filter Housings.
Quick answer: Drip lines clog from sand and silt, algae from open dams, and iron in borehole water. Use a media (sand) filter for dam and river water, a disc or bag filter before the drip lines, and iron removal for iron-rich boreholes. Very salty water harms crops; RO is used only for high-value hydroponics. FRP filter tanks start from KSh 24,000 on H-TECH’s listings.
Key facts
  • Sand/silt: media filter
  • Final protection: disc or bag filter
  • Iron: oxidise and filter
  • Salty water: test before irrigating

Filters

Salty Water and Crops

Salty water burns leaves and builds salt in the soil. Test EC/TDS before irrigating. RO is too costly for field irrigation but is used for hydroponics and nursery seedlings where clean water pays back. Never irrigate with concentrated RO reject.

Pumping

Solar pumps suit daytime irrigation: solar water pumps for farms. Size the pump for the filter’s pressure loss: pump size calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my drip lines clogging?

Usually sand and silt, algae from open water, or iron from boreholes.

Which filter is best for drip irrigation?

A media filter for dirty water plus a disc or bag filter before the lines.

How do I remove iron from irrigation water?

Aerate or oxidise the iron, then filter it out.

Can I irrigate with salty borehole water?

Test it first; very salty water damages crops and soil.

Is RO used for irrigation?

Only for high-value uses such as hydroponics and nurseries.
