Water Softener Sizing and Prices: Flow, Hardness and Tank Size
Pictured: H-TECH automatic water softener system.
Quick answer: A softener removes calcium and magnesium (hardness) by ion exchange: hard water passes through resin that swaps them for sodium, and the resin is cleaned (regenerated) with salt brine. Size it by two things: the flow you need (tonnes or m³ per hour, T/H) and how hard your water is times how much you use between regenerations. H-TECH softeners run from KSh 60,400 (1 T/H) upwards.
Key facts
  • Ion exchange swaps hardness for sodium; salt brine regenerates the resin
  • Size by flow (T/H) and hardness × daily volume
  • "0844" = an 8 × 44 inch resin vessel
  • Test hardness before choosing

How a Softener Works

  1. Service: hard water flows through resin beads that hold calcium and magnesium and release sodium.
  2. Backwash: the control valve reverses flow to loosen the bed.
  3. Brine draw: salt water from the brine tank washes the hardness off the resin.
  4. Rinse and refill: the resin is rinsed and the brine tank refilled for next time.

Valves can regenerate on a timer or after a set volume: manual vs automatic control valves.

How to Size a Softener

  1. Flow: the peak water flow you need, in m³/h (1 T/H = 1,000 litres per hour).
  2. Hardness: from a water test report (how to read a test report).
  3. Volume between regenerations: daily use × days between regenerations. Harder water or higher use needs more resin.

The model codes show the resin vessel size: 0844 is 8 inches wide and 44 inches tall; 1465 is 14 × 65 inches.

Softener or RO?

A softener removes hardness only. If the water is also salty (high TDS) or has fluoride, RO is needed; softeners are often installed before RO to protect the membranes. See do I need a water softener?.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a water softener in Kenya?

H-TECH softeners start from KSh 60,400 for 1 T/H and go up with size.

How do I size a water softener?

By the peak flow you need (T/H) and the hardness times the volume used between regenerations.

What does 0844 mean on a softener?

The resin vessel is 8 inches wide and 44 inches tall.

Does a softener remove salt from water?

No, it removes hardness; salty (high-TDS) water needs RO.

How often does a softener regenerate?

It depends on hardness and water use; the valve regenerates on a timer or after a set volume.
