Water Softener Calculator: Resin Size and Salt Use
Pictured: H-TECH automatic water softener with brine tanks.
Quick answer: Hardness to remove per day (grams) = hardness (mg/L) × water softened (m³). Resin needed = that load × days between regenerations ÷ the resin's capacity per litre. Salt per regeneration = resin litres × the salt dose. Resin capacity and salt dose depend on the resin and valve settings; the defaults are editable rules of thumb.
Key facts
  • Daily load (g) = hardness (mg/L) × m³
  • Resin = load × days ÷ capacity per litre
  • Salt = resin litres × salt dose
  • Capacity and salt dose are editable estimates

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate water softener size?

Multiply hardness by daily water use for the daily load, times days between regenerations, divided by resin capacity per litre.

How much salt does a water softener use?

Resin litres × salt dose per regeneration; the calculator shows per regeneration and per month.

How do I convert mg/L hardness to grains per gallon?

Divide mg/L by about 17.1.

How often should a softener regenerate?

It depends on hardness, water use and resin size; every few days is common.
