How to Start a Honey Processing and Packaging Business in Kenya
Pictured: Manual Liquid & Paste Filling Machine and Automatic Induction Sealing Machines.
Quick answer: A honey packing business buys or harvests raw honey, strains it, lets it settle in a food-grade tank, checks the moisture (honey with too much water ferments), then fills, seals and labels jars. Supermarkets need KEBS certification. A manual paste and liquid filling machine starts from KSh 95,000, a manual labeller from KSh 50,000 and hand sealers from KSh 7,000 on H-TECH’s listings.
Key facts
  • Strain → settle → check moisture → fill
  • Food-grade stainless contact parts

How Honey Is Processed for Sale

  1. Buy or harvest ripe, capped honey from beekeepers you trust; record where each batch came from.
  2. Extract and strain through fine stainless or nylon mesh to remove wax and bee parts.
  3. Settle in a food-grade tank for a few days so air bubbles and fine wax rise; draw honey from the bottom valve.
  4. Check moisture with a honey refractometer; honey that is too wet ferments in the jar.
  5. Gently warm only if needed for filling; overheating damages flavour and quality.
  6. Fill, seal and label in a clean room.

KEBS and Labelling

To sell in supermarkets you need product certification from the Kenya Bureau of Standards against the honey standard, with lab tests of your product. Your label must show the product name, net weight, your name and address, batch number, best-before date and the KEBS mark once approved.

Why Does Honey Crystallise?

Crystallisation is natural and depends on the flowers the bees visited; it does not mean the honey is fake or spoiled. Customers may still ask, so explain it on your label or social media.

Costing a Jar

Add the cost of honey per kg, jar, lid, seal liner, label, labour and a share of rent. Use the cost per bottle calculator and see repackaging profit calculator.
